burn-out

Burn-out. In the Media, it is no longer taboo, but it is still a topic that we would rather not talk about or even avoid completely if it concerns ourselves. Still, it is good to have it over and over again. We live in a world where we are always in a hurry, constantly busy and running continuously from the start.

Although we all try to keep all balls high these days, it is very important to become aware of your own well-being. From being overwrought and overtired. People think that being tired is normal, that it just goes with it and that they sleep at the weekend. The big issue of this mentality is that we think it has no negative impact on our health, both physically and emotionally. In the perfect world, we see big warning signs as soon as we come close to a burn-out. But let’s be honest, this is not the case. It is important that we become more aware so that we can intervene on time and get the most out of life.

1. Admit it

The problem with a burnout is that many people hide it because it feels like a failure and as something temporary. “It’s over again”. Some do not even realize that they have it and the other large part will never discuss it publicly or admit it. This part will therefore never ask for help on its own or admit that they have a hard time. To get yourself out of a burn-out or avoid it, the first thing you have to do is to admit what is actually going on. You do this for yourself, but also for the people around you. The moment you express that you are in a burn-out, your environment can help you and you can be open to help yourself. You do not have to do this alone. Indicate how you really feel!

2. Do not punish yourself

After step 1, it is important that you accept it. Do not punish yourself, it is absolutely not necessary to get angry with yourself, or to think ‘ if only I had done it differently ‘, or blame yourself everywhere. What has happened has happened. It is important now to look ahead, to the future, how you can best handle it for yourself. And of course, it is important that you are equally sad and you embrace your emotions, but do not stick to it. The longer you stay in these emotions, the less chance you will notice and the harder it is to get out of this burn-out / almost burn-out.

3. Slow down darling

Now that you are aware of what is going on, the most important thing is to listen to your body. Your body simply wants to rest. During a burn-out, your body has a huge stress level. The only way to reduce this stress is to be in ‘airplane mode‘ to go. Relax your body completely. You came into this burn-out situation because you went on too long. Continued your work too long, continued to plea too long, continued with everything for too long except yourself. You have chosen too few moments for yourself, which is what your body needs right now and again. So stop running back and forth, do what is right for you. With one person that can be a Netflix marathon, for another, it is an hour’s walk in the forest, and for some, it is starting in a good book. Do what is necessary and give your body a rest.

4. Ego

It is time to set aside your big ego and say ‘HELL YEAH’ to someone who offers your help. The familiar phrase ‘ I can do it myself ‘, you have to forget now. Embrace the people who offer you help, once again, you are not alone. On the other hand, do not be afraid to ask for help. Would you like to talk to a psychologist? But do you find it too embarrassing to go alone? Ask a family member or a good friend. Do you like to walk a bit but do not you rather go alone? Ask your neighbor or your sister! You do not have to do it alone! Remember that you can also be a superwoman without doing everything alone.

5. Ready? ACTION

In this last step, we are going to talk about action. Right now you have to start thinking just as well. You ended up in this burnout via a certain road. The most important thing is to realize what has actually happened. Change of plans! If you are going to do exactly the same as before, then I guarantee that you will end up in exactly the same situation again. And that’s the last thing you want. Change your lifestyle. Take care of yourself and make yourself a priority. For many people, this may feel selfish, but be sure to plant something for yourself every week. Change step by step. It’s okay if you find this difficult. Think of small changes, reading a book for 10 minutes instead of checking your social media. Make sure you wake up well rested, breathe deeply in and out and if necessary write down your tasks in a to-do list. Including your ‘me-time’. This way you can also be sure that you are doing something for yourself!

As with everything, do not expect that you just recovered again. Your body needs rest, give that rest. Put yourself on one, do not give up and remember: after a burn-out, you may not become the old you anymore, but the new you! You can do this!
